Taylor Sheridan Star’s Gritty Revenge Thriller Is Officially One Of The Biggest Movies On Streaming

Taylor Sheridan may be the king of modern Westerns, thanks to hits like Yellowstone (2018–2024), Hell or High Water (2016), and Landman (2024–), but he also knows how to deliver brutal revenge tales, with his credits including Sicario (2015), Wind River (2017), and Without Remorse (2021). Now, a gritty revenge thriller featuring one of Sheridan’s frequent collaborators is officially one of the biggest movies on streaming.

Directed by James Wan with a script written by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, loosely based on Brian Garfield’s 1975 novel, Death Sentence is a 2007 vigilante action film following a mild-mannered executive (played by Kevin Bacon) who takes the law into his own hands after his son is murdered by a gang; its leader played by Garrett Hedlund, who also stars in Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King (2022–) and Lawmen: Bass Reeves (2023).

Nearly two decades after its theatrical release, Death Sentence is shooting its way up Tubi’s charts, currently No. 5 on their Top 10 overall movies and TV shows in the United States as of today, October 29. It ranks above The Green Mile, Psycho Side Chick, Friday the 13th, Grease, and above 65, She’s All That, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Halloween II.

Death Sentence was originally released in theaters in 2007 and failed to make back its modest $20 million budget at the box office, grossing just $17 million. It was also panned by critics, resulting in a terrible 21% Rotten Tomatoes score, who claimed that its utterly ridiculous storyline and excessive brutality turn the revenge thriller into an over-the-top and needlessly violent spectacle.

Hedlund Is Currently Busy In The World Of Taylor Sheridan

Garrett Hedlund stars in several Taylor Sheridan shows on Paramount+, starting with Tulsa King, appearing as a main cast member in all four seasons as Mitch “the Stick” Keller, a former bull rider, bar owner, and convict who is an associate of the Manfredi syndicate. Hedlund is currently filming Tulsa King season 5 in New York City.

He also guest-starred in Lawmen: Bass Reeves as Garrett Montgomery, a posse man hired by the titular lawman for his exceptional riding skills and knowledge of the area, undertaking a high-stakes mission into Indian Territory to track down the Underwood gang. Whether you love it or hate it, Death Sentence is proving that a little revenge can go a long way on streaming.
