Striker on standby after Liverpool confirm bombshell injury

A striker is now on standby for his big opportunity. It comes after a bombshell Liverpool injury was confirmed.

Liverpool have confirmed Alexander Isak is injured. The Swede has left his country’s camp for the international break and won’t take part in their remaining three fixtures.

That’s an interesting one. Isak’s injury supposedly doesn’t look too serious but at the same time, Sweden are happy to release him incredibly early. It suggests he’d at least be a doubt for the match in two weeks’ time.

Now, does that mean he’s actually capable of playing for Liverpool in their next fixture? It doesn’t 100 per cent look that way and it means at least one Red is now on standby for the biggest opportunity of his career.

Lewis Koumas has his chance

Liverpool cannot afford to take major chances with Isak. He’s the only fit experienced striker at the club, with Hugo Ekitiké out for the foreseeable future.

Thus we do expect Liverpool to reduce his playing time after the international break. The injury is certainly part of that but also, they just need to – even just burnout for Isak would be a massive blow to Liverpool.

And so we fully expect Lewis Koumas to see more opportunities over the coming weeks. Isak will need time to be 100 per cent and the Welshman has looked fantastic in his limited minutes, especially in the EFL Cup against Tottenham Hotspur.

Andoni Iraola has been talking him up in training to Isak, as well. That’s as good a sign as any that the head coach feels Koumas can play a key role in some manner right now.

Post-international break is the time to check that out. So expect to see a bit more of Koumas, especially with this Isak injury, and it’s time we feel he’ll take full advantage of.

Koumas is a special talent and the kind of striker who can play a role for any side. Now’s the time to prove that.
