The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, Yobe State Council, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration over unresolved welfare demands, warning of possible industrial action.
The ultimatum, which commenced on October 28, 2026, is expected to expire on November 11.
The union is demanding the implementation of a 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions, immediate implementation of the reviewed 2024 Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, CONTEDISS, and approval of the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, CONTTA, and applicable Earned Allowance.
Expressing concern over what it described as unequal treatment of academic and non-academic workers, NASU said, “Similar allowances approved for lecturers are yet to be extended to non-teaching personnel.”
The union maintained that non-academic workers play essential roles in the administration and effective running of tertiary institutions.
“The welfare of non-teaching staff deserves equal attention and recognition,” it stressed.
NASU warned that continued delays in addressing its demands could affect workers’ morale and disrupt the smooth operation of the institutions.
It urged Governor Buni and other relevant stakeholders to intervene before the expiration of the ultimatum, saying, “We appeal to the state government to address these demands to prevent industrial unrest and disruption of activities in our tertiary institutions.”
The union said its leadership would reconvene on November 12 to determine its next course of action if the government failed to meet the demands within the stipulated period.
