‘Street Fighter’ Almost Officially Brought Back a Fan-Favorite Star After 32 Years

The classic video game franchise Street Fighter is back in theaters, with a new live-action adaptation that’s already grossed $57.3 million USD. It’s not the first time the franchise has made it into the realm of live-action; it first hit the big screen in 1994, with a much-derided adaptation that’s become something of a cult classic. And while the new movie may not want to emulate its predecessor too closely, it almost had a cameo from one of that movie’s stars.

The movie does feature an homage to the 1994 film; while battling Chun-Li (Callina Liang), the villainous M. Bison (David Dastmalchian) paraphrases one of his 1994 counterpart’s most iconic lines, as originally delivered by Raul Julia in one of his last performances: “For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was a Tuesday.” There are, however, no winking cameos from the original cast members, as is often seen in franchise films; for instance, Dolph Lundgren dropped into Masters of the Universe earlier this summer, 39 years after becoming the big screen’s first He-Man.

One cast member almost did make it in: Kylie Minogue. The Australian pop star played Cammy in the original film, and the producers of the new film were interested in having her cameo. They were having difficulty contacting her, but masked singer Orville Peck, who plays Vega in the new film, is a friend of Minogue’s. As revealed in a recent interview with Queerty, Peck told them, “Guys, I can text her.” Unfortunately, Minogue didn’t end up pulling her red beret out of the closet; while she was willing, she couldn’t make it work with her schedule. She did tell him that making the original movie “was one of the most fun experiences of her life,” and he’s still trying to get co-star Mel Jarnson into a meeting of the Cammies.

Four songs, four completely different theories about how a life is
supposed to go. Here is the one that has been playing under yours, what it says about you, and where
you have heard it doing the same job on screen.

Your life sounds like the most stubbornly hopeful song ever
written. It is about ordinary people on an ordinary night who have not given up on the thing
they are quietly working towards, which is a description of most people and almost nobody
admits it.

  • You are playing a long game, and you would rather get there slowly than make a scene
    about it.
  • The song famously cut to black on the last scene of The Sopranos, which is the single
most argued about needle drop in television history.
  • Glee then made it a phenomenon all over again, and a 1981 album track became one of the
most streamed songs of the last century.
  • The reason it works on you is the same reason it works on everybody, which is that it
never once promises the thing will actually happen.

Your life sounds like a training montage, and you are completely
fine with that. This is the song for people who need a bit of friction to function, and who
get noticeably better the moment somebody suggests they cannot do it.

  • You are driven by the comeback rather than the win, which is why the second attempt at
anything is always your best one.
  • Sylvester Stallone commissioned it for Rocky III after he could not get the rights to
another track, and it went on to define the whole genre.
  • That guitar intro has been doing the work of an entire pep talk for more than forty
    years.
  • The risk in this one is real, since a person who needs an opponent will eventually go
    looking for one.

Your life sounds like the happiest song ever recorded, and the
clever thing about it is that it is quietly a bit sad underneath. You are the person who
makes an evening happen, and the room is measurably worse when you are not in it.

  • You treat joy as something you build rather than something you wait for, which is a
genuine skill and an exhausting one.
  • Mamma Mia turned ABBA into a second career for a whole new audience, and this is the
    song everybody waits for.
  • There is a melancholy buried in it about a night that will not last, and that is
precisely why it lands harder every year.
  • Your friends would describe you as the reason they still go out, which is a bigger
    compliment than it sounds.

Your life sounds like a song about getting out. Springsteen wrote
the definitive account of being young somewhere small and knowing, absolutely, that the real
thing is happening somewhere else.

  • You are restless in a way that is not unhappiness, and you have never fully unpacked
    anywhere.
  • This is the most cinematic song on the list, which is why it has soundtracked roughly
every film about leaving a town behind.
  • The record nearly did not happen at all, since Springsteen spent six months on the title
track alone and almost scrapped it.
  • What saves it from being simple escapism is that he is not running alone, and neither,
if you are honest, are you.

What Is 1994’s ‘Street Fighter’ About?

While the new film has the same fighting tournament structure of the video games, the 1994 Street Fighter, which was written and directed by Die Hard scribe Steven E. de Souza, takes a more conventional action film structure. Drug lord M. Bison (Julia), ruler of the breakaway nation Shadaloo, has taken several Allied Nations relief workers hostage and is demanding a massive ransom. An AN task force led by Colonel William Guile (Jean-Claude Van Damme) swoops in to intervene, with the help of martial arts con men Ken (Damian Chapa) and Ryu (Byron Mann). Meanwhile, reporter Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen) is trying to get her own vengeance on Bison.

Street Fighter is now in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
