There was a point during free agency when the Golden State Warriors were considered favorites to land LeBron James and potentially Anthony Davis. Neither move came to fruition, as Golden State ultimately settled for the options available to them.
It was heartbreaking for the fanbase that the Warriors never signed James in free agency. Head coach Steve Kerr made it clear that the team was never really close to landing the superstar.
“Like, I know he was talking to Steph and Draymond. They were recruiting him. But that’s different. That’s player-to-player. Once free agency started, and all those rumors were out there — trust me, there would’ve been very serious conversations. And there never were,” Kerr said.
Things have not gone Golden State’s way early in the regular season. Kristaps Porzingis is dealing with an autoimmune disorder, and the Warriors are reportedly exploring trade options for him.
“Golden State has started exploring trade routes for Kristaps Porzingis, who is now seriously contemplating his future in basketball as he deals with recurring symptoms from the autoimmune condition termed as POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), sources tell ESPN,” ESPN’s Shams Charania posted.
Given how Golden State has played, the Warriors need a trade, and they need one soon. Kerr has hinted at the possibility of a major deal, acknowledging that the organization has explored opportunities to acquire high-level players.
“We’ve explored all kinds of trades to bring in great players, and the process has been really good,” Kerr said.
It is difficult to know which players Kerr is referring to, but the Warriors could be willing to make a move if the right big man becomes available at the right price. However, Golden State is unlikely to pursue a deal that significantly compromises its future.
Stephen Curry has only so much time left to compete at the highest level, and as he gets older, he cannot be expected to carry Golden State the way he once did. Kerr and the organization know they will need to add another impact player if they hope to make a playoff run.
