Steve Cherundolo has been named the head coach of the U.S. under-23 men’s soccer team that will compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Cherundolo, 47, coached Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer from 2022-25, winning the MLS Cup in 2022.
He played as a defender in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and was named to the 2002 World Cup team but did not play due to injury.
The U.S. men lost in the 2024 Olympic quarterfinals to Morocco (4-0) in their first time qualifying for the Games since 2008.
The U.S. coach at the Paris Games was Marko Mitrovic, who after the Games became the U20 head coach.
The U.S. gets an automatic spot at the 2028 LA Games as host nation.
The Olympics are largely a U23 tournament for the men with three over-age exceptions allowed per roster. If any members of the 2026 U.S. World Cup team makes the 2028 Olympic team, they will have to be over-age exceptions.
The U.S.’ lone Olympic men’s soccer medals came at the 1904 St. Louis Games, where two of the three teams competing were American.
Olympic soccer rules will limit the amount of players who were on the World Cup team from playing at the LA Games.
