Stephen Curry is eligible for a contract extension between now and June 30, 2027, or he can enter free agency for the first time in his career.

Curry has spent 17 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, defining himself as arguably the most iconic player to ever represent the franchise.

The 2026-27 season is his final year under contract with the Warriors, leading to speculation on Curry’s future amid an uncompetitive roster, but Curry has shot that down vehemently.

Stephen Curry confirms his desire to retire as a member of the Warriors

Curry spoke to Chris Alvarez from ABC on September 1, trying to quash rumors of a potential Warriors exit by reaffirming his desire to retire with the franchise.

“I am excited for the season… The contract stuff, as it always goes, we will solve it when it’s time… There’s no secret I want to be here the rest of my career. Just making sure it’s the right situation and the setup. Long-winded way of saying it gets done when it gets done.”

Curry became extension-eligible on August 29 and will remain so until the final day of the NBA season on June 30, 2027. The Warriors and Curry can agree on an extension basically whenever they want.

Curry averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists last season, proving he can still produce at the level of a max player when healthy.

Even if he couldn’t play at that level, the Warriors would likely still give him whatever contract he demands for his years of service.

If Curry wants to remain on the Warriors, it seems both the team and the player could instantly thrash out a deal to keep the legend with the franchise for two more years.

However, there are a multitude of reasons that point to Curry waiting till next summer’s free agency to sign a new contract in Golden State.

The Warriors can have over $150 million in cap space next summer, so Curry could wait to see how the team uses that space to retool the roster and then sign a discounted deal to maximise his chances of contention.

Curry also can’t sign an extension longer than two years since he’s over 38 years old, but he can sign a three-year contract in free agency, giving him an additional year and a contract till he’s 41 years old.

Signing an extension now will limit the Warriors’ flexibility in the 2027 offseason and force a shorter commitment from Curry, so it’s best for them to play this season out and then decide.
