Stefon Diggs penalized for celebration after first TD with Commanders, ruining 2-point conversion shot in loss to Eagles

Stefon Diggs got a little too excited for his first touchdown with the Washington Commanders.

Diggs caught a perfect 10-yard pass from Jayden Daniels for an easy touchdown early in the fourth quarter of their 24-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon. That brought them back within two points of the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, too, and just a conversion away from tying the game back up at a critical point of the contest. 

But before they could even attempt it, Diggs ruined the opportunity. 

Immediately after catching the ball in the end zone, Diggs wrapped himself around the field goal post to celebrate the score. That drew a quick unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from the officials, and forced the Commanders to kick the extra point instead. 

While there was no guarantee that the Commanders were going to tie the game up there, Diggs’ excessive celebration backed them up 15 yards and ensured that they wouldn’t get the chance. 

Diggs signed a one-year, $12 million deal to join the Commanders last month in a move meant to boost Washington’s receiver room. Diggs had 1,013 yards and four touchdowns last season with the New England Patriots. The Commanders mark the fourth team that Diggs has played for now in as many years. His touchdown grab was his third of the game.

The Eagles responded with a 43-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dallas Goedert after Diggs’ penalty, too, so they took control of the game right back instantly and made it far less meaningful.

The Commanders managed to get down into scoring position, and then Daniels found Antonio Williams for a touchdown inside the two minute warning. But they were still down by two.

And the two point conversion attempt failed. Daniels tried to dump it off to John Bates, but the Eagles stopped him short.

The loss is not on Diggs, and the Eagles defense made a great play at the end of the game to seal the deal. But still, had it been a tie game before Goedert’s touchdown, the final stretch of the contest in Philadelphia could have absolutely played out differently.
