It appears ongoing contract talks between the Pittsburgh Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. aren’t making much progress. A new report throws cold water on the chances the two sides agree to an extension soon.
“They have less than 48 hours to try and work out a long-term deal,” ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler said on the network. “….I haven’t sensed optimism on this situation throughout.”

Pittsburgh’s front office has a rule where the franchise doesn’t negotiate contract extensions during the season. Fowler went on to say the situation has soured to the point that Porter is entertaining options about a possible trade.
“He’s been practicing, but it has been slow,” Fowler added.
The Steelers have relied on Porter in the secondary for a good while. During the 2025 season, Porter posted 52 total tackles and an interception. He was credited with a career-high 14 passes defended.
The corner has been optimistic about a deal getting done.
“I mean, at this point we got, what, 42 [hours]?” Porter said, per ESPN. “I don’t know how many we got until game day, but clock’s ticking, so it is what it is. At this point, we’re going to be prepared. Regardless of the situation, we’re going to want to play ball.
“I’m trying to be optimistic about anything and everything and all possible outcomes. … I hope it could get done, hopefully before then, but if it happens, it happens.”
Reporting has also come out that Porter wants to be the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback. He is refuting those reports.
“I don’t know where that came from,” Porter said. “Whoever made that, I really don’t pay too much hype into it.”
Pittsburgh is under new leadership this season. Mike McCarthy is now the team’s head coach, replacing Mike Tomlin. Expectations are high for McCarthy, who is reuniting with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The Steelers open their 2026 season Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Pittsburgh made the NFL Playoffs in 2025 before losing to the Houston Texans.
