Steam Officially Drops 5 Free Games You Can Download And Keep Forever (October 27)

It’s no surprise that Steam is the go-to stop for PC gamers, given just how many incredible free games are available on the platform. While competing platforms such as GOG and Epic have their own unique draws, nothing quite compares to Steam’s extensive free-to-play library, constant limited-time deals and discounts, free demo options, and more.

Of course, sorting through Steam’s ever-expanding catalog can be a challenge, especially with high-profile releases and popular multiplayer titles taking up so much of the spotlight. Smaller indie games frequently arrive without much fanfare, and some of the platform’s most interesting hidden gems are easily overlooked.

Fortunately, October 27 brings another batch of free games worth checking out, with five new additions available on Steam starting today. For PC gamers looking to expand their libraries without spending a dime, these latest releases offer some fresh experiences to dive into, and potentially a few unexpected surprises as well.

Outcast Tales Is A Post-Apocalyptic Turn-Based RPG

Outcast Tales is arguably one of the most ambitious free releases of the bunch. Developed by Hardlane Studio, this post-apocalyptic tactical RPG challenges players to assemble a three-person crew of misfits and survive a dangerous wasteland filled with mutants, raiders, and other threats.

It features a “character personality system,” which influences everything from combat abilities to relationships between party members. Characters can form friendships, fall in love, or develop bitter rivalries depending on player decisions. With turn-based combat, roguelite elements, and plenty of narrative choices, it’s highly replayable and completely free.

The Onion Voting Simulator 3D Is Truly Hilarious

The Onion Voting Simulator 3D is certainly the strangest game on the list, marking the first-ever video game from satirical news outlet The Onion. This absurd walking simulator puts players in the shoes of an ordinary American attempting to exercise their democratic rights, which turns out to be way more difficult than expected.

Players navigate a school gymnasium, locate their ID, endure long lines, and discover bizarre power-ups. Alternatively, they can simply stay home and avoid voting altogether. Unsurprisingly, the experience is packed with political satire, ridiculous scenarios, and even a terrifying descent into Hell, and it’s actually got incredible reviews, ranking at 98% with over 100 player ratings so far.

Playable Archive Is Just In Time For Halloween

Playable Archive is a particularly timely release for horror enthusiasts looking for something unsettling ahead of Halloween. Developed by DarkStone Digital and published by DreadXP, this supernatural mystery revolves around a spooky archive containing footage of unexplained events.

The story follows a New England couple who discover a strange object while renovating their home, setting off a disturbing chain of events involving demonic rituals, communication with the dead, and multiple timelines. It’s a relatively short experience, lasting just 30 to 60 minutes, and it has to be completed in one sitting because there’s no save system.

A Northern Evil Is Great For Horror Fans Too

A Northern Evil: Tape One is another excellent option for horror fans, although its approach is much more atmospheric. Set in the remote wilderness of northern Sweden, the game follows a woman named Minna searching for her missing friend. Her investigation leads her to an eerily abandoned village, where empty buildings, a deserted train, and mysterious clues suggest something terrible has happened.

Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian folklore, the game features exploration and psychological horror as opposed to a traditional combat system. It’s also the opening installment of a larger story, with additional chapters planned.

Goddess Cultivation Is A Sleek Idle JRPG

Finally, Goddess Cultivation: Idle RPG offers something completely different, combining traditional JRPG mechanics with more relaxed idle progression. Players recruit goddess warriors, assemble powerful teams, and participate in strategic turn-based battles against fantasy creatures.

There’s an extensive character-collection system, along with equipment upgrades, elemental mechanics, and relationship-building features. Crucially, characters can continue earning experience and resources even when players aren’t actively online. The game is currently available in Early Access, with its core experience free to play, although optional in-game purchases are included.

All together, these five titles will keep players busy for the time being, or can be added to your list to check out later once you’ve powered through all those other unplayed games sitting in your Steam library.
