‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Officially Returns With 5 New Adventures

Time is running out for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The newest series in Paramount+’s galaxy of Star Trek shows will debut its second and final season early next year. However, before that, you can see the faculty and students of Starfleet Academy one more time.

Starfleet Academy takes place in the 32nd century, almost a thousand years after most other Star Trek series. The galaxy has undergone a massive disaster, The Burn, that killed billions and rendered space travel extremely perilous. Now, as the galaxy and the Federation rebuild, Starfleet Academy has reopened its doors to a new class of future explorers. And even as those students deal with first loves and first losses, a deadly threat in the form of a reactionary movement that wants to tear the galaxy apart.

And now, before the Academy crew returns to the screen, IDW Publishing is releasing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact. The miniseries ran for five issues last year, and is now being collected in a complete trade paperback edition. The series follows cadets Caleb, Genesis, Jay-Den, Kyle, and Tarima as they complete what seems to be a routine mission on an uninhabited planet, until a disaster cuts them off from their instructors, and they come into contact with strange new life. The series was written by Layne Morgan (Legacies), and features art by newcomer Corali Espuna. The TPB will be released in stores on January 27, 2027.

  • Villeneuve shot it on large-format film and kept the fog and rain practical on set wherever
    he could.
  • Three short films by Luke Scott and Shinichiro Watanabe bridge the 30-year gap between the
    two movies.
  • Denis Villeneuve’s Dune won six Academy Awards in 2022, including Cinematography and
    Original Score.
  • Hans Zimmer turned down Christopher Nolan’s Tenet so he could score Dune instead.
  • Dune: Part Two arrived in 2024 and brought in Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Christopher
    Walken.
  • David Lynch’s 1984 version and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unmade one are both their
    own legends by now.

  • John Williams’ score was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and became the
    best-selling symphonic film soundtrack ever.

Star Trek business is booming for IDW as the comic book publisher explores the galaxy. The publisher is currently releasing the ongoing series Star Trek, which follows Seven of Nine and the Enterprise-G as they explore a region outside the known galaxy. On the horizon is Star Trek: Crusher, a new five-issue miniseries exploring Dr. Beverly Crusher’s adventures between The Next Generation and Picard, courtesy of artist Megan Levens and Crusher’s longtime portrayer, Gates McFadden. They’re also recruiting famed Star Wars novelist Timothy Zahn to pen a new graphic novel with Ángel Hernández, Star Trek: Roc’s Egg, centering around a mystery on the Deep Space Nine space station.

The Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact trade paperback will be released in stores on January 27, 2027. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
