- Sophie Cunningham’s viral 22-second finger-pointing moment followed a heated exchange between Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner
- Both Cunningham and Bonner received technical fouls during the altercation in the Fever’s June 22 game against the Mercury
- Cunningham later called the gesture “the stupidest thing” but admitted it frustrated Bonner and sparked online meme
While the Indiana Fever won the game, Sophie Cunningham won the internet with a memorable gesture — a lengthy finger point — after she helped lead the team to an 86-77 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday, June 22.
The moment occurred after an altercation between Cunningham’s Fever teammate, Caitlin Clark, and former Fever player DeWanna Bonner, who now plays for the Mercury. After the referees blew the whistle dead in the fourth quarter, Clark and Bonner got entangled in an exchange of words.
Meanwhile, Cunningham, 29, who has now become the focal point of the dust-up, opted against words in contrast to Bonner, 38. Rather, she simply took her pointer finger and aimed it at the Mercury player, holding it there for approximately 22 seconds while maintaining direct eye contact.
Ultimately, a seemingly amused Fever staff member redirected Cunningham toward the bench. Both players received technical fouls for the exchange, which the viral Fever player later explained in a Saturday, June 27 episode of her Show Me Something podcast.
The Fever guard claimed on the podcast that Bonner was the one who “did something extra,” but Clark, 24, got the technical foul. That prompted her to walk onto the court to discuss with the referee because “it shouldn’t have been one or the other” who got penalized.
“I was just kind of pointing, and [Bonner] was like, ‘Don’t you point at me!’ And I was like, ‘Oh, shouldn’t have said that,'” Cunningham recalled on her podcast. “And I didn’t say a word,” she added, while recreating the pointing gesture that went viral.
“So stupid! Like, that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done,” she said looking back. “I’m telling you, everyone’s like, ‘That is so dumb.’ I think it was so dumb. But it was pissing her off, and I couldn’t help myself. I could not. She was losing her s—, and all I was doing was literally pointing.”
Cunningham and Bonner were teammates on the Fever for a short tenure early in the 2025 WNBA season. They played together for only nine games before Bonner left the team and was subsequently released on June 25, 2025.
Bonner signed with the Mercury that July, which made her and Cunningham opponents once again.
