Without uttering a single word, Sophie Cunningham reignited the sports world’s biggest debate over the weekend.
Coming off a one-year deal with Indiana, Sophie Cunningham enters unrestricted free agency.
Cunningham was among the first WNBA players to take a firm stance on the transgender debate in women’s sports, instantly sparking a massive divide.
Supporters turned up at games wearing her gear and echoing her message, while critics aggressively turned on her. Despite heavy media pushback and calls for her team to cut ties, Cunningham hasn’t backed down a bit, as she continues to push her message.
Sophie Cunningham doubles down on women in sports
Sophie Cunningham knew exactly what she was doing showing up to Mizzou’s game against Florida in that hat. Stitched with “No Cis, just…” on the side and “Woman” across the front, the simple four-word fit was all it took to blow the whole debate wide open again.
Outkick’s Jonny Root shared her message, stating on X:
‘Sophie Cunningham sent a bold, truthful message at the Mizzou vs Florida game with her hat The side said “No Cis, just..” The front: “Woman” Now The Athletic/New York Times are calling for the Fever to get rid of her… We need more bold, female athletes like Cunningham.’
In the wake of her show of support for women at the Mizzou game, the Athletic were quick to call Cunningham out and suggested that the Fever shouldn’t re-sign her due to her beliefs and comments.
However, the general reaction online seems to lean towards a positive light for Cunningham, with many taking offence to the Athletic’s remarks.
