SSANU Sokoto varsity SSANU resumes work, issues fresh ultimatum
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Sokoto State University chapter, has directed its members to resume work on Monday, November 9, while giving the Sokoto State Government another 14 working days to meet its outstanding demands.

The union warned that it would embark on a total and indefinite strike if the government failed to address the issues by November 27, 2026.

The decision was contained in a statement issued on Sunday and jointly signed by the chapter’s Chairman, Ismail Muhammed, and Secretary, Mansur Ahmad.

The resumption followed the end of the union’s five-working-day warning strike, which began on November 2 and ended on November 6.

SSANU said the decision to return to work was intended to promote industrial harmony and give the government another opportunity to resolve the dispute.

However, it warned that resuming work did not mean it had withdrawn its demands.

“Congress has resolved to resume work with effect from Monday, November 9, 2026, while issuing a fresh 14-working-day ultimatum to the Sokoto State Government to address all outstanding demands before November 27, 2026,” the statement said.

The union said it embarked on the warning strike because the government had failed to approve and implement its demands despite several meetings, written submissions and reminders to relevant officials.

Its demands include the payment of outstanding arrears from the 25 per cent salary increase, approval and implementation of the 35 per cent Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, CONTTA, and annual salary increments for eligible members.

The association is also demanding the release of outstanding check-off dues owed to the union.

SSANU maintained that the demands were legitimate, arguing that similar benefits had already been extended to comparable categories of workers at Sokoto State University, Shehu Shagari University of Education and other state-owned tertiary institutions.

The union called on Governor Ahmed Aliyu to intervene personally and ensure the immediate approval and implementation of the outstanding entitlements.

It also urged the Ministry for Higher Education, relevant government agencies, traditional institutions, parents, students and other stakeholders to help resolve the dispute before the ultimatum expires.

The statement said the union expected concrete approvals, clear timelines for implementation and full payment of outstanding entitlements, rather than further delays, promises or partial responses.
