Sci-fi can be one of the most thrilling genres on TV, and when the narratives start to get too real, it can feel eerie and almost like a documentary as the story reflects reality. To some degree, every show on TV has the ability to depict real things in a way that is packaged differently, but science fiction is typically a step removed from the truth, which makes it all the more intriguing when these stories start to feel like they are predicting real events.

Successful sci-fi relies on creating an enriching and engaging narrative that feels like it could be real, but there are significant distinctions, like the presence of advanced technology, alien life, or a setting in space. But, some sci-fi shows manage to weave in details that ultimately feel very close to reality, and occasionally, older sci-fi shows begin to feel increasingly prescient.

With all of that in mind, the following shows each include details and aspects that hold a mirror up to society and modern living in a way that can occasionally be uncomfortable and confronting, but it also acknowledges areas where there is a potential to improve and avoid mistakes that clearly lead to considerable drama and fractures in society.

The Expanse

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/a-crowd-watches-an-arm-wrestle-in-the-expanse.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Starting out with one of the most grounded high sci-fi shows around, The Expanse is a thrilling example of a series that explores what life could look like for a human race that manages to spread out across the solar system and become increasingly competent with space flight.

This series is stunning and distinctly realistic in the way that it approaches technological issues such as how to create gravity in space, and how to navigate flying through the depths of a total lack of atmosphere. With that in mind, the show takes these challenges seriously, and actually tries to create realistic ways to navigate as opposed to many shows that are willing to simply leave these details unexplained.

However, one of the more visceral details that appears to reflect today’s world comes down to how this show depicts the intense resource wars taking place between Earth, Mars, and those living on the Asteroid Belt. In this way, the show appears to simulate the real resource wars taking place in the world today and impacting everyone alive, not just the people making the deals or fighting on the front lines.

Severance

Next up, Severance may seem like a leap in terms of the way this series explores a very different world where an operation known as “severance” has been made available, so people can achieve the ultimate work-life balance. But, the show’s depiction of corporate mundanity, modern capitalism, and explorations of unhealthy management all feel eerily true to life.

The series doesn’t rely on an overwhelming amount of advanced tech, and much of the show feels like it makes more sense in a past setting. However, the way that they explore the relationships between people and organizations, and the way businesses and management can take advantage of employees is incredibly confronting, largely because it rings true in a variety of ways.

From the way that management provides the team with pizza parties as a way to reward copious amounts of work instead of any financial reimbursement, to the way that employees are treated like an asset by a company rather than a real person who has needs beyond the confines of the office, they all speak to truth in a way that is unnerving and absolutely gripping to follow along with.

Black Mirror

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/black-mirror.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Black Mirror is an anthology series that features a brand-new story and cast in practically every episode. However, the overarching theme of the show is the fact that it holds a mirror up to some of the darkest and most twisted parts of life, and pushes familiar ideas to the extreme in a way that effectively highlights some of the most disturbing elements of these modern ideas.

Evidently, not every episode has a clear connection to reality or modern life, but for a handful, such as “Nosedive,” where people rate every interaction they have with others and their personal ratings begin to dictate what they can achieve and access in real life, they feel darkly close to how algorithms and ratings across numerous apps now consume major portions of people’s lives.

There are also episodes that deal with surveillance, AI, advertisements, and more that all prompt conversations about how close these thriller narratives are coming to what people are experiencing in everyday life. Evidently, despite the broad range of topics Black Mirror touches on, the show is a remarkable window into what the future might look like concerning technological influence.

For All Mankind

On what is inarguably a brighter note than the shows mentioned previously, For All Mankind is an extraordinary sci-fi series available on Apple TV that deals with an alternate history narrative about how the Soviet Union beat the US to the Moon, and thus inspired the space race to have a much more enduring and impactful run.

Further adding to the realism of the series, the show takes roughly a decade time jump between each season, and examines what might have happened if humanity invested more time and resources into mastering space travel and trying to go beyond just the Moon in an effort to colonize and take control of the Solar System.

The show does deal with political tension and the competitive nature of major superpowers, but it also pours the energy of these competitions into the improvement of mankind, which ultimately creates a story that feels more hopeful and bright. That being said, there are more than a few conflicts as humanity comes to grips with their new homes and attempts to assert independence as they spread out.

Person of Interest

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/jim-caviezel-and-michael-emerson-in-person-of-interest.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Person of Interest follows Harold Finch, a tech billionaire, who has built a machine capable of using artificial intelligence to detect patterns in behavior through gathering tons of sensitive information on people, and then predicting who is likely to commit or participate in crimes. In order to deal with these potential incidents, Finch hires a former CIA agent to assist him in putting his machine to good use.

The fascinating thing about this show is not simply that it dialed in on the potential for AI to detect and monitor human patterns of behavior back in 2011, but the reality that this series came out before the real-world NSA leaks. In 2013, Edward Snowden came forward with thousands of leaked documents exposing illegal practices by the Intelligence Community (IC) monitoring many private pieces of information on people around the globe.

With that in mind, Person of Interest is a particularly relevant show in the way it predicted the future. As much as the leaks in 2013 exposed more insidious practices by the US IC, it seems likely that these practices are still in use around the world by other agencies and organizations, particularly now with the rise of AI.

Devs is a compelling sci-fi drama created by the incredible Alex Garland, and revolving around a tech moguls’ earth-shattering invention. Having created a machine capable of mapping data and information that traces all the way back to the Big Bang, this same machine can also be used to not only detail the present, but also predict the future.

Beyond the core premise of the show, there is also a fascinating examination of the tendency to create a sort of tech-based messianism in places like Silicon Valley, and how tech campuses’ produce a cult-like corporate culture that is evident in many of the biggest tech companies operating today.

The primary aspect of this show that feels particularly poignant is a closer look at how big tech operates, and the ability to decisively cut through the noise and reveal the more problematic and dark aspects of how this type of corporate takeover of societal values impacts on communities on a wider scale.

Years and Years

Years and Years is a stunning British miniseries, that follows the journey of an ordinary middle-class family as they adapt to a slowly rotting world. Rather than introduce some sort of meteor-like apocalyptic event, the series shows how the world begins to disintegrate with the increased prevalence of technology and shrinking concerns for people’s wellbeing where profits are concerned.

Over six episodes and 15 years, the family deal with banking system failures, an increase in the presence of microplastics, deepfake political campaigns, and people choosing to literally “enhance” and “hack” their bodies with technology integrations. While each change can seem rather small and insular examined independently, these events grouped together create a chilling picture of a world headed towards certain disaster.

As with every entry on this list, Years and Years holds a mirror up to the darkest parts of society, examines what the impact would be of such a thing continuing on it’s current trajectory, and then creates a thrilling and chilling sci-fi series that feels grounded while also transporting the viewer into an alternate reality.
