‘Sherlock’ and ‘Poirot’ Lead 10 Mystery Shows Streaming Free in November

Hannah covers horror, sci-fi, and games at Collider, where she writes news and features, reviews new releases, and interviews the people who make them. She’s helping build out Collider‘s gaming coverage, with Pokémon as one of her specialties. If she isn’t writing about a monster, she’s probably watching one on a tape from her VHS collection.

November’s television plans are about to involve a substantial number of suspicious deaths. PBS is bringing together some of the genre’s most familiar investigators for a programming event that should keep mystery fans occupied well beyond Halloween. For viewers who prefer following clues to watching another holiday romance, the timing is particularly welcome.

The appeal of a good detective series rarely ends with learning who committed the crime. Returning to a favorite investigator can be just as satisfying, especially when the pleasure comes from watching them notice everything everybody else missed. Next month’s lineup offers plenty of opportunities to revisit those characters, alongside a few less familiar names worth getting to know.

PBS Distribution has announced “Mystery Month,” a free programming event on the PBS Drama channel on Prime Video, beginning Sunday, November 1, at midnight ET. The month-long schedule includes Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Sherlock, Grantchester, and Endeavour, with dedicated marathons giving several of its biggest titles extended time in the spotlight. PBS Drama is a free, ad-supported streaming television channel, so the event follows an always-on programming schedule. Viewers can tune into the channel throughout November to watch the featured mysteries as they air.

Britain makes more detective television than any country has any
business making, and somehow almost all of it is good. Here is the one you belong in, what it says
about you, and the case for it being the best of the four.

You want the tea, the gossip and the vicar behaving oddly.
Midsomer is a county where the scenery is beautiful, the fete is on Saturday and the murder
rate is roughly that of a small war, and absolutely nobody involved thinks this is strange.

  • You are sociable, curious and the first to notice that somebody has changed their
    routine.
  • It has been running since 1997 and sells to well over two hundred territories worldwide.
  • John Nettles handed over to Neil Dudgeon in 2011 and the show did not miss a step.
  • Your flaw is that the line between caring about people and enjoying the gossip is
    thinner than you admit.

You feel other people’s grief as if it were handed to you
personally. Broadchurch is less a whodunnit than a study of what a small town does to itself
when it finds out that the answer was always going to be somebody everybody already knew.

  • You are the one people tell the truth to, and you carry all of it afterwards.
  • Olivia Colman won the BAFTA for Best Actress for the first series and David Tennant has
    never been better.
  • Chris Chibnall wrote it before taking over Doctor Who, and took Jodie Whittaker with
    him.
  • Your risk is absorbing so much of other people’s pain that nobody notices yours.

You go through things rather than around them. John Luther is the
best detective in London and a liability to everybody who works with him, and the show is
completely honest that those two facts are the same fact.

  • You are the one people call when the normal approach has already failed.
  • Idris Elba won a Golden Globe for it in 2012 and it made him a film star more or less
    overnight.
  • Luther: The Fallen Sun arrived on Netflix in 2023 and took the character properly
    cinematic.
  • Your weakness is that doing the right thing your way still leaves a mess for somebody
    else.

You say the thing and you do not dress it up. Vera Stanhope turns
up in a hat and a mac, is rude to almost everybody, and is the only person in the room
prepared to ask the question that the family has been waiting years for somebody to ask.

  • You have no patience for performance, and the people who like you really like you.
  • Brenda Blethyn played her for fourteen series before stepping away, and ITV ended the
    show rather than recast.
  • Ann Cleeves wrote the novels, and also wrote the books behind Shetland, which is the
same trick in a colder place.
  • Your flaw is that blunt and kind can be the same thing, but only if people already know
    you.

David Suchet’s Agatha Christie’s Poirot will receive a marathon running November 4–8, giving the famously meticulous Belgian detective several days to work through his cases. Grantchester follows with dedicated programming on November 12, before Sherlock takes its turn on November 14. Endeavour gets the spotlight on November 15, and Grantchester returns for another marathon on November 22. For anyone still hoping to see more of Benedict Cumberbatch’s consulting detective, the November 14 marathon offers an opportunity to revisit his investigations with Dr. John Watson. Meanwhile, the announced Grantchester programming highlights James Norton’s Sidney Chambers and Robson Green’s Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, whose partnership brings crime-solving into the clergyman’s life in 1950s England.

The full event extends beyond those marathon selections. Van der Valk brings investigations to Amsterdam, while Baptiste follows Tchéky Karyo’s stubborn investigator Julien Baptiste. Pie in the Sky offers a lighter approach through DI Henry Crabbe, who divides his attention between police work and cooking. Also joining the schedule are The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, which explores other detectives working in late Victorian London, and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries: Next Chapters. Rounding out the lineup is Reilly: Ace of Spies, shifting the focus toward espionage with its dramatization of Sidney Reilly’s life.

PBS Drama’s “Mystery Month” begins November 1 at midnight ET and runs throughout November on Prime Video’s free PBS Drama channel.
