Shaw promises Man Utd will be ‘up there’ in Premier League this season

Luke Shaw has no doubt that Manchester United will be “up there” at the top of the Premier League this season, promising the Red Devils will learn from Saturday’s loss to Hull City.

United’s first full campaign under Michael Carrick got off to a miserable start as they went down 2-0 to Sergej Jakirovic’s newly-promoted Tigers at MKM Stadium.

First-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy were enough to secure victory for Hull, who had been winless in 10 league meetings with United dating back to November 1974, when they beat the Red Devils in the second tier.

United have now opened four of the last seven Premier League seasons with a matchday-one defeat (W3), but this was their first-ever such loss to a promoted side.

A strong end to 2025-26, with Carrick in charge on an interim basis, had raised pre-season expectations at Old Trafford, and left-back Shaw is still confident United can succeed.

“We have the exact same feeling, even now after the game. It will be a very good season for us, I’m sure of it. We’ll be up there,” Shaw said. 

“Of course, this is a little blip. It’s obviously not nice to happen at the start of the season when our expectations are high and we should be starting the season strong, showing everyone that we’re here this season.

“It was not meant to be. But one game won’t define us. We’ll regroup, we’ll go again and, like I said, I promise it’ll be a good season for us.”

Both of Hull’s goals came from set-pieces, making it the first time United have conceded twice from such situations (excluding penalties) in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League game since December 2023 (versus Aston Villa).

But when asked if a lack of passion or intensity was responsible for United’s defeat, Carrick reacted angrily. 

“Oh come on, that’s ridiculous,” Carrick told Viaplay. “That’s a ridiculous thing to say. Just because you get beaten doesn’t mean you don’t care about it.

“Their two goals came from set-plays. Other than that, we had opportunities. 

“I don’t think it was passion or anything to do with that. I just think it was those moments that made a difference in the game.”

United have a chance to atone at home to another promoted side, Gary O’Neil’s Ipswich Town, on Sunday.
