Seattle Seahawks starting right guard Anthony Bradford was a (kind of) surprising scratch last week against the Arizona Cardinals after picking up a hip injury in practice. Christian Haynes started at right guard in his place, but he wasn’t the only one seeing time on the line as rookie Beau Stephens got some snaps as well.
This week, Bradford was placed in injured reserve and will miss at least the next four games. Offensive coordinator Brian Fleury confirmed that Haynes and Stephens will rotate at RG again this week on the road against the Washington Commanders.
“Yeah, I think that those two will continue to rotate in a similar situation. It’ll just be determined by the state of the game,” Fleury said in Thursday’s press conference.
Considering the fact that the Seahawks rushed for over 150 yards against the Cardinals on the way to putting 31 points on the scoreboard, both of those players acquitted themselves well. Fleury agreed with that sentiment, and was pleased by their performance.
“I thought Beau handled his first actual NFL snaps pretty well,” Fleury said. “We were deliberate in how we were going to sub him in. It wasn’t a set rotation. We just knew that there were going to be times in the game where we could just say, ‘Hey, this is going to be your series and see how he functioned, and I thought he did well. I was happy with how Christian played as well with the amount of snaps that he had. That’s quite a bit of volume compared to what he’s normally gotten.”
It remains to be seen whether this rotation will continue for the entirety of Bradford’s absence or if either Haynes or Stephens will take hold of the position. Ideally, it would be Stephens since he’s under contract for multiple years, but in reality it will almost surely be Bradford’s job when he comes off IR. Still, this is a good chance for Haynes and Stephens to try and secure themselves a spot on the burgeoning Seahawks offensive line.
