The Seattle Seahawks received encouraging news on Sam Darnold‘s hip injury Thursday, but there is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding their starting quarterback.

Darnold is dealing with what The Ringer and Netflix’s Tom Pelissero described as an “unusual” muscle strain in his hip area after leaving Seattle’s 13-10 season-opening win over the New England Patriots.

Tests have ruled out a fracture, and there is currently no consideration of placing Darnold on injured reserve, according to Pelissero. However, his timetable to return remains uncertain.

Darnold was injured on Seattle’s opening possession Wednesday night after being sacked by Patriots defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones. He limped off the field before eventually heading to the locker room and was ruled out before halftime.

Drew Lock replaced him and helped Seattle erase a 10-point deficit, completing 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Now the Seahawks might have to rely on Lock for at least a little longer.

General manager John Schneider said Thursday that Seattle still doesn’t know exactly how much time Darnold will miss.

“Sam’s tough as heck, but timeline we just don’t know yet,” Schneider said on The Pat McAfee Show.

“It’s always scary when players have to leave the stadium and go to the hospital..

Avoiding injured reserve is significant because an IR designation would require Darnold to miss at least four games. Instead, Seattle can evaluate him week-to-week while allowing the muscle strain to heal.

The Seahawks have some extra recovery time following Wednesday’s opener before traveling to face the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 20.

Considering the initial fear surrounding the injury, an unusual muscle strain is certainly better news than what Seattle could have received.
