After missing Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders with a calf injury he sustained in practice last week, Seattle Seahawks safety Julian Love appears to be trending towards a potential return in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to head coach Mike Macdonald, Love underwent extensive work on Monday morning which yielded positive results. However, his status for practice this week remains unclear.
“As far as Julian goes, it’s a day-to-day thing right now,” Macdonald said at Monday’s press conference. “We’ll see how that shakes out. He did some extensive work this morning and it went well. We’ll see how that translates to Wednesday and move forward.”
Should he remain sidelined against Los Angeles, Rodney Thomas II and AJ Finley will presumably continue to fill in. Both opened the season on Seattle’s practice squad but were signed to the active roster following a flurry of injuries to begin the season.
Although he was active for the first two games, Finley didn’t see the field but was asked to step up against Washington with Love out. However, he struggled in coverage, was the closest defender on Treylon Burks‘ first half touchdown and was flagged for a costly penalty in the fourth quarter that led to a go-ahead field goal.
With fellow safety Ty Okada (hamstring) sidelined and without an update on a possible return date, Love’s return would certainly provide a significant boost to Seattle’s shorthanded secondary, who looked like a shell of themselves in Week 3.
More information regarding Love’s status should become available on Wednesday evening when the Seahawks release their first injury report of the week.
