SPARTANBURG, S.C. — With just a one-run lead heading to the fifth, the Spartanburgers exploded for a 12-batter and seven-run inning. Hub City (24-38, 58-70) cruised past Jersey Shore (20-41, 46-80) to an 11-4 win.

A.J. Russell got the game off to a rip-roaring start. The right-hander fanned all three batters he faced on 14 pitches. The bottom of the first began with four ‘Burgers hits in a row against Jersey Shore starter Giussepe Velasquez. Paxton Kling singled, then was thrown out attempting to steal second. Maxton Martin followed with a single, Antonis Macias doubled and Quincy Scott annihilated a Velasquez breaking ball onto the Spartanburg Community College Berm in left field. Scott’s 12th longball of the season gave Hub City a 3-0 lead.

Russell continued to cruise until he found trouble in the fourth. Jersey Shore scored a pair of runs on four hits. Hub City’s starter got some help from his help from the defense to end the frame. Scott threw out BlueClaws first baseman Kodey Shojinaga trying to score from second on a single.

Luke Savage and Cole Fehrman took over for Russell and combined for four perfect innings of relief. After the three-run first, Velasquez settled in for Jersey Shore. He faced the minimum from the second through the fourth.

Jake Eddington took over for the fifth, and Hub City’s offense went hunting. After a strikeout to start the inning, two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Martin drove in a pair with a single of his own. A second walk loaded the bases, and a wild pitch and Scott single brought in two more runs to make it 7-2. After a flyout, Arturo De Freitas stroked a punishing two-run single to end the night for Eddington. Kevin Warunek entered with De Freitas at first and walked the first batter he faced. Esteban Mejia singled in a 10th run before a strikeout ended the 12-batter inning.

Hub City tacked on one more run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly off Warunek. Gerardo Lopez quieted the ‘Burgers bats in the seventh and eighth. Aiden Brainard allowed two runs in the ninth before Jesus Gamez recorded the final out of the ninth.
