He also approved the adoption of monthly allowances of N70,000 for Readers and N145,000 for Professors, as well as 35 per cent revised allowances for non-academic staff across Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions.

The approved payments are effective from January 1, 2026, with arrears scheduled to be paid in two tranches alongside October and November 2026 salaries.

The approval further stated that all the allowances for the unions would be tax-free.

Strike Disrupts University Activities

The industrial action had affected academic and administrative activities at LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH.

The situation took a new turn on Monday when NASU members in the three institutions reportedly shut the main gates of the universities as the unions intensified pressure for the implementation of the agreement.

With the governor’s approval now conveyed to the unions and university authorities, the state government has called for an immediate end to the industrial action.

Sule said relevant government agencies had been directed to commence the implementation process immediately in accordance with existing financial regulations.

Sanwo-Olu also appealed to union leaders to direct their members to suspend the strike and resume work immediately.

Unions Consider Government Position

In his appeal, the governor thanked the unions for their patience and understanding during the negotiation process and urged workers to maintain industrial peace.

“I sincerely appreciate the unions for their patience, maturity and understanding during the negotiation period and enjoin all members to continue to maintain industrial peace and to be more dedicated to their duties,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The government’s circular had been received by union chairmen and vice-chancellors of the affected universities, according to the report.

However, the unions were yet to formally announce their position on the governor’s approval at the time of the report.

One of the union chairmen said he had summoned an emergency congress for Thursday to deliberate on the state government’s position.

Another union chairman raised a concern over the treatment of retired professors, saying their emoluments were not captured in the governor’s approval.

The development leaves the unions with the task of considering the government’s latest offer and deciding whether the approved measures sufficiently address their demands.

The outcome of the emergency congresses is expected to determine the next step regarding the ongoing industrial action across the three state-owned universities.
