Sami Whitcomb shocked many fans after it was announced that she will not be participating in the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup. Whitcomb will not be performing her role as team captain for the Opals in the tournament in Berlin, as she prioritizes her physical health.
Whitcomb injured her knee a couple of months ago in a game for the Mercury, which eventually led to an arthroscopic procedure. She does not seem to have fully recovered as of now and is still dealing with knee soreness. Obviously, Whitcomb does not want to endanger her longevity on the court by playing in the World Cup tournament right now, but her decision seems to have thrown the team into chaos.
Sandy Brondello will now have the crucial task of replacing Whitcomb, most probably looking up to other players like Jade Melbourne or Isobel Borlase to take Sami’s place. Still, Whitcomb’s absence is being felt hard by fans of the Opals, who hoped to see her lead the team once more.
“While Sami is understandably disappointed not to be able to represent the Opals at the World Cup, her long-term health has to come first. Our thoughts are with Sami. We know how much representing the Opals means to her, and we recognize the enormous emotional and physical toll this situation has taken,” EGM of High Performance, Jason Smith said.

Sami Whitcomb is yet to speak to the press after her decision was announced, and it does not look like she will change her mind any time soon. Meanwhile, the Opals will soon be heading to Berlin to kick off their preparations for the World Cup.

On the other side, Sami Whitcomb’s Mercury is already undergoing changes despite losing their playoff berth quite recently. The Phoenix franchise recently lost one of their icons in DeWanna Bonner to the Dream team. Bonner might have thought that she would not be able to take part in the playoffs this time out, but her new deal with Atlanta will give her just that.

Bonner signing with the Dream franchise is not yet official but will most definitely happen soon. For Bonner, this playoff appearance is crucial, considering that retirement rumors are already swirling about her. With Atlanta, Bonner will clearly be able to see a lot more success, considering just how incredible the team has been playing this time out.
