A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after sustaining severe injuries in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before her graduation ceremony.
Adaobi, a student of Kharkiv National Medical University, was critically injured on June 29, 2026, when Russian forces reportedly dropped aerial bombs on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. She initially received treatment in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for further medical care.
Despite the efforts of doctors in both countries, she died on Sunday, July 5.
Kharkiv National Medical University confirmed her death in a statement, describing her as “a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person” who was known for her dedication to learning, hard work, and passion for helping others.
According to the university, Adaobi sustained life-threatening injuries during the attack. Medical teams in Kharkiv and Germany fought to save her life, but she eventually succumbed to her injuries.
The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office also expressed condolences to her family, stating that doctors battled to save her until the very end.
Adaobi had been studying at Kharkiv National Medical University since 2020. During her studies, she completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Türkiye.
Reports indicate that at the time of the airstrike, Adaobi and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a graduation photoshoot. Fatima was killed at the scene, while Adaobi was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
The airstrike reportedly left 12 other people injured.
