Robertson urges struggling Spurs to forget about last two seasons

Andy Robertson says Tottenham’s players must forget about their struggles over the last couple of seasons if they are to climb the Premier League table. 

Spurs will spend the international break bottom of the Premier League with just two points on the board, with this the first time they have propped up the table at least five games into a season since 2008-09.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side did at least end their goalless start to the campaign against Aston Villa on Saturday, but after going down 3-2, they have lost 50 of their 141 Premier League games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In just seven years at the venue, they have suffered as many Premier League defeats as rivals Arsenal have suffered in 382 matches at the Emirates Stadium, which opened 20 years ago. 

Spurs finished 17th in both 2024-25 and 2025-26, narrowly avoiding relegation in the latter of those seasons as they finished two points clear of West Ham on the final matchday.

They then spent over £300m on new players in the summer transfer window, but Robertson believes there is still a hangover from their disappointing recent seasons, which he and his fellow new arrivals can help to overcome. 

“They’re starting this journey. They’ve had a couple of really tough seasons in terms of finishes in the league,” Robertson said in an appearance on The Overlaps’ Stick to Football podcast. 

“They’ve had to go into the market, they’ve spent a bit of money, but I do believe Tottenham are now starting a journey.

“Now, I don’t know how far that journey can go, nobody does, but the determination in that group… you can see last season hurt them a lot. And maybe we’re still guilty of carrying that weight of last season on our shoulders.

“That’s the message of the manager, first and foremost. And also, that falls on me, and the other new players, if we need to forget. We need to now try and get Tottenham back to where we believe they belong. The fans are still carrying it as well and you don’t blame them. They’ve been through such a tough time.”

Robertson joined Tottenham on a free transfer after nine years with Liverpool, who he helped to win two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and two EFL Cups.

And when Robertson became aware his contract at Anfield would not be renewed, he immediately viewed Spurs as the most attractive destination available to him.

“I spoke directly to the manager. We had a couple of video calls over the summer. He’s super ambitious, you can tell that as a manager,” Robertson said of his initial conversations with De Zerbi.

“He wants to be able to win trophies. But he also knows that we need to start showing it sooner rather than later.

“It was always going to be Tottenham, even from January, as long as they stayed up. I ended up getting invested in Tottenham games. 

“I was watching Tottenham thinking, ‘come on’, especially when De Zerbi came in. I was fully confident; I was really happy with how much Spurs wanted me.”

Spurs’ next Premier League game is against Manchester United at Old Trafford on October 10, with the Red Devils making their joint-worst start to a Premier League season after five matches (five points, level with 2014-15).
