Rivers CP removes DPO over alleged extortion

Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the immediate suspension of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Oyigbo Police Division over allegations of extortion and abuse of office.

The directive followed accusations raised by a rights activist, who alleged that the officer collected five hundred thousand naira from a man reportedly arrested and detained without any established offence.

The activist further claimed to have shared evidence of the alleged payment on social media, and also accused the officer of filing a questionable charge against a woman.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, said the officer had been removed from duty in line with the Command’s commitment to accountability, transparency and professional conduct.

She explained that Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, ordered the immediate removal of the DPO to ensure a full and unbiased investigation into the allegations.
