Rio Ngumoha becomes England’s fifth-youngest debutant

Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha has written his name into the England record books after becoming the fifth-youngest player ever to represent the senior national team.

The 17-year-old winger made his first appearance for the Three Lions during Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand, coming on at the interval and immediately making an impact.

Despite not being part of England’s final squad for the 2026 World Cup, Ngumoha was invited to join Thomas Tuchel‘s pre-tournament camp and seized his opportunity when called upon.

At 17 years and 281 days old, Ngumoha became England’s 1,300th capped player and the youngest debutant since Jude Bellingham earned his first senior cap in 2020. His energetic display caused plenty of problems for the opposition and earned him the man-of-the-match award, rounding off a memorable evening.

The appearance caps a superb breakthrough season for the Liverpool academy graduate. Ngumoha featured 29 times for the Reds’ first team during the campaign, scoring twice and attracting widespread praise for his performances. His progress has also been recognised with a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
