The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to rename the Federal University Wukari in Taraba State as T. Y. Danjuma Federal University, in recognition of the contributions of retired Lieutenant General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma to Nigeria’s development.

The resolution followed a motion on notice sponsored by Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, Mark B. Useni and Ayuba Zaku Dampar. The lawmakers proposed that the institution be renamed after the former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Defence, subject to the necessary amendment of its enabling Act.

The House also directed relevant committees to engage stakeholders and facilitate the legislative processes required to implement the proposed name change.

Why Reps Want the University Renamed

Presenting the motion, Gbefwi said the Federal Government established the university in 2011 to expand access to higher education, promote research and support national development.

He highlighted Danjuma’s contributions through military and public service, philanthropy, and support for education, healthcare and vulnerable communities.

According to the lawmaker, renaming the institution after the retired military officer would recognise his contributions to national development and preserve his legacy of service for future generations.

Legislative Process Required for Renaming

The proposed renaming would require an amendment to the university’s enabling Act. The House has therefore called for stakeholder engagement and the necessary legislative steps to advance the proposal.

The resolution represents a proposal by the House of Representatives and does not, by itself, mean that the university’s name has officially changed.

Further legislative action and the required legal procedures would be necessary before the institution could formally adopt the proposed name.
