Ahead of training camp, the Bucs tend to usually lock down some players with an extension or sign a veteran. On Monday, however, a different type of move may now be on the horizon before veterans report.
On Monday, July 27, veteran defensive lineman and former first-round pick Vita Vea requested a trade, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Vea is heading into the final year of a four-year, $71 million extension that he signed in January of 2022. The request comes on the heels of other notable defensive lineman extensions over the last year from the likes of Devonte Wyatt of the Green Bay Packers and Quinnen Williams of the Dallas Cowboys. Both their extension had them hovering around $20 million a year, while Vea is averaging just under $18 million.
Vea is a two-time Pro Bowler and won Super Bowl LV with the team.
General manager Jason Licht is a believer in drafting good players and retaining them, so not all hope is lost. This could easily be a line in the sand by Vea and his team as they work towards an extension to keep the monster in the middle of their defensive line in place.
