Red Wings reclaim first place with pivotal win over RailRiders

The Rochester Red Wings capitalized on two throwing errors during a five-run fifth inning and defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 7-3 Thursday night at ESL Ballpark.

Rochester entered the night tied with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre atop the second-half standings after the RailRiders pulled even with a win Wednesday. Thursday’s victory allowed the Red Wings to reclaim sole possession of first place and strengthen their position in the race for the International League’s second-half title.

The game was scoreless through four innings before Rochester sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth.

Maxwell Romero Jr. and Liover Peguero opened the inning with walks. Sam Petersen then put down a sacrifice bunt, and a throwing error by third baseman Max Schuemann allowed Romero to score. A throwing error by pitcher Elmer Rodríguez on Trey Lipscomb‘s fielder’s choice brought home Peguero and made it 2-0.

Buddy Kennedy followed with a two-run double, scoring Petersen and Lipscomb. Cayden Wallace singled home Kennedy for a 5-0 lead.

Isaac Lyon held the RailRiders scoreless over five innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven. He earned the win and improved to 2-0.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored twice in the sixth. Yanquiel Fernández singled home Max Schuemann, and Oswaldo Cabrera followed with a run-scoring single that brought home Marco Luciano.

The Red Wings restored their five-run advantage in the bottom of the sixth. Sam Petersen walked, advanced on Seaver King’s single and scored when Kennedy drew a bases-loaded walk. Wallace then lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored King for a 7-2 lead.

The RailRiders scored their final run in the seventh when Marco Luciano grounded out and Max Schuemann crossed the plate.
