Red Wings' GM search could drag into September: NHL analyst

Most NHL analysts are on vacation as the offseason heads into August.

But longtime NHL TV executive and analyst John Shannon and Vegas Golden Knights TV host Daren Millard are busy with their TV show/podcast, “100% Hockey with Millard & Shannon.”

On an episode this week, Shannon said that the Detroit Red Wings‘ search to replace general manager Steve Yzerman “may not be rectified until September.”

Yzerman stepped down on July 15 to transition into a new role as a senior adviser to CEO Chris Ilitch.

“I was told was that it’s going to take a lot longer than people realize,” Shannon said. “We’re not talking about an imminent hiring. It’s very quiet.

“Steve is still walking around the office and there are decisions to be made, but he’s in a maintenance position with the hockey club.”

Later in the show, NHL color analyst Eddie Olczyk said he would like to see his friend, Kris Draper (Red Wings assistant GM and director of amateur scouting) “get an opportunity” to run the team.

Olczyk, 59, announced on the show that he’s stepping down after four years as a TV analyst with the Seattle Kraken to spend more time with his family in Chicago.

“Steve keeps things close to the vest, whether he was in Tampa or in Detroit,” Olczyk said. “I don’t know what their feelings are or what their mandate is. We’ll see how this all plays out.”
