Red Wings flirt with no-hitter, cruise past Omaha for fifth straight

The Rochester Red Wings cruised to a 7-2 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers on Wednesday night at Werner Park.Rochester improved to 73-47, collecting 11 hits and striking out 14 Omaha batters.

Later in the inning, Seaver King singled, advanced on a disengagement violation and stole third before scoring on Yohandy Morales’ RBI double to make it 2-0.

Rochester added three more runs in the fourth. Cayden Wallace walked and later scored on a groundout by Pineda before King delivered the big blow, crushing a two-run home run to right field, his 11th of the season, for a 5-0 advantage.

The Red Wings extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Wallace lined a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Morales. An inning later, Pineda reached on a single and eventually scored when Morales reached on a fielding error by Omaha shortstop Jack Pineda, pushing the lead to 7-0.

King finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Pineda went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Morales doubled, drove in a run and scored once. Wallace added an RBI single and a run scored.

On the mound, Jared Simpson opened with three scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out four. Luis Perales earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Riley Cornelio, Jack Sinclair and Kyle Nicolas combined to finish the game.

Omaha’s Abraham Toro ended Rochester’s no-hit bid with a seventh-inning single and later scored on Mathew Lugo’s RBI hit. The Storm Chasers added another run in the ninth.

The Red Wings finished 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base, while Omaha managed just five hits and went 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

The victory was Rochester’s fifth straight, improving the Red Wings to 73-47 overall and 28-19 in the second half as they sit atop the International League East second-half standings.
