Blue Jays’ true MVP is flying under the radar

The Toronto Blue Jays have plenty of recognizable stars, but one of their most valuable players is quietly putting together an outstanding stretch in MLB.

Alejandro Kirk has been one of the best offensive catchers in baseball since the All-Star break, and his numbers make a compelling case that he deserves far more attention.

Among qualified catchers since July 17, Kirk ranks first with a .361 batting average, .439 on-base percentage and .969 OPS. His .530 slugging percentage ranks second, while his .350 xwOBA ranks third.

The plate-discipline numbers make his production even more impressive. Kirk’s 13.3% walk rate ranks fourth among qualified catchers during that stretch, while his 10.2% strikeout rate is the best mark in the group.

That’s a particularly impressive combination. Kirk isn’t simply getting hits; he’s controlling the strike zone, avoiding strikeouts and consistently finding ways to reach base.

Kirk’s overall value during this stretch is where the argument becomes difficult to ignore. He leads qualified catchers with a 168 wRC+ and 1.6 fWAR, while his 1.10 WPA also ranks first.

For a position that demands so much physically, that type of offensive production is significant. Kirk is providing Toronto with elite offense while handling one of the most demanding positions on the field.

His recent surge has also been noticed around the league. Sportsnet recently highlighted how Kirk’s bat has been heating up at exactly the right time for the Blue Jays, while MLB’s official coverage has documented his continued offensive contributions throughout July and August.

Toronto has no shortage of players who receive more attention than Kirk, but the numbers tell a compelling story. Since July 17, he’s been arguably the most productive catcher in baseball by nearly every major offensive metric.

The Blue Jays need as much offensive production as possible as they push toward the postseason, and having an elite bat behind the plate could prove extremely valuable. Kirk may not be the loudest name on Toronto’s roster, but right now, he’s making a very strong case to be considered the team’s true MVP.
