The Boston Red Sox lost another home game on Tuesday, falling 4-2 to the Baltimore Orioles.

The loss dropped the Red Sox’s home record to 9-20, which is the worst mark in baseball this year. It’s also Boston’s worst start at Fenway Park in a season since 1932.

The Red Sox’s home struggles this year have been incredibly puzzling for a franchise that has historically dominated at Fenway Park. They’re even more bizarre compared to the team’s 16-14 record on the road this season.

After Tuesday’s loss, Isiah Kiner-Falefa gave a cryptic explanation for why Boston’s been so much worse at home this season.

“I just feel like on the road we’re a very close-knit team. We come home and there’s just a lot of people. It’s different. It’s just a different vibe at home,” Kiner-Falefa said during his postgame interview. “We got to figure out a way to make it small like how it is on the road. I just feel like at home, we see a lot of people we don’t know that are around this area.”

It’s unclear what Kiner-Falefa means by that or whom he’s referring to, but it sounds like the Red Sox are potentially more distracted at home than they are on the road, perhaps by Fenway Park’s larger crowds, bigger media presence and more intense atmosphere.

Playing in Boston is unlike anywhere else, and there’s usually an adjustment period for players. But to Kiner-Falefa’s point, the Red Sox need to find a way to succeed at home the way they have on the road, whatever it takes.
