The Boston Red Sox, following their sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in L.A., are expected to be buyers at this year’s trade deadline.

On deadline day, there was a major update for the Red Sox that revealed some huge news about a potential All-Star trade target. This player would make for a very interesting addition.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Red Sox are reportedly in trade talks with the Baltimore Orioles about catcher Adley Rutschman in what could be a wild intradivision trade for an All-Star catcher.

Red Sox in trade talks with Orioles over Adley Rutschman

“The Red Sox and Orioles are talking about Adley Rutschman, per sources, and there is a feeling that a deal could be completed at some point today,” Feinsand reports.

This update for the Red Sox is a massive one, and it’s a lot more interesting than a typical report as well, for a very simple reason. Feinsand’s report notes that a trade could actually happen.

The Red Sox are just linked to Rutschman, or simply showing interest. Feindsand is reporting that a deal “could be completed” by the trade deadline.

Boston does need the catcher position, and they certainly would make sense for Rutschman in a trade if one could actually happen.

He’s a 28-year-old catcher, a three-time All-Star, who is under club control through the 2027 MLB season. He is also a Silver Slugger and could be of interest to the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees.

Instead of letting one of their top AL East rivals land Rutschman, the Red Sox picking him up would make a lot of sense. There is just one problem: Rutschman is hurt.

He is currently on the 10-day injured list, and that injury might make a trade a bit more complicated. However, if the Red Sox can pull it off, adding Rutschman would be incredibly intriguing.

This season, Rutschman has posted a 1.8 bWAR in 67 games played with a .251 batting average and a .764 OPS with a 115 OPS+.

He’s not hitting as he did in 2022 and 2023 when his OPS was above .800, but his production this year is more than good enough for the Red Sox to justify spending a lot to acquire him.

This is a very interesting report from Feinsand, and one to watch as the 6:00 p.m. MLB trade deadline approaches tonight.
