How Asante Samuel Jr. is shining in Joey Porter Jr.'s absence

As the Pittsburgh Steelers navigate the early stretch of training camp at Saint Vincent College, all eyes have naturally been on the cornerback position. With Joey Porter Jr. currently sidelined on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to a back injury that flared up during arrival mobility tests, the defense needed an aggressive playmaker to set the boundary tone.

The veteran cornerback has quickly emerged as the clear standout of Pittsburgh’s early practices, locking down wideouts and consistently erasing big-play opportunities. Rather than merely filling a void in the starting secondary, Samuel has performed like a true shutdown CB1 and was thus turning heads during the first week of training camp.

“On the first day of practice, July 29th, was Asante Samuel Jr. I thought he was just locking it down all over the field,” noted “Locked On Steelers” host Christopher Carter. “He was the CB2 in the Steelers defense. And honestly, sometimes he was kind of looking like CB1 because he was just shutting everyone down from Michael Pittman to DK Metcalf.”

Samuel’s fast start wasn’t just a single-day flash. As team drills intensified through the opening week, his tight coverage and ball skills remained a constant theme for reporters on the beat.

“Asante Samuel Jr. is asking to be the Steeler starting cornerback in these practices and he’s looked pretty good,” Carter added. “He’s been shutting down people left and right. In my two practices I’ve watched, I haven’t seen him give up a big play yet or really even give up a play.”

Whether Porter’s absence proves temporary or extended, Samuel’s rapid acclimation to the defense gives Pittsburgh vital depth and flexibility in the secondary. If he continues to lock down high-profile receivers once the pads go on, the Steelers’ defense won’t just hold the line; they may boast one of the most formidable cornerback tandems in the AFC.
