Yan Diomande transfer latest as Liverpool face growing competition

Liverpool’s interest in Yan Diomande looks real enough, but the situation is getting crowded and expensive very quickly. As reported by The Athletic, the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger is due back for pre-season assessments next week after World Cup duty with Ivory Coast, and his summer now looks set to be dominated by elite-level interest.

That part makes sense. Diomande scored 15 goals and supplied 11 assists in all competitions after arriving from CD Leganes. Those are serious numbers for a teenager in a major league, especially one playing in a side where development and trading are part of the business model. Leipzig know exactly what they have, which is why the asking price has reportedly been set at €120 million, £102.5 million.

Real Madrid enter Diomande race

This is where it changes. Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal were already in the picture, with Manchester City monitoring things in the background. Now Real Madrid are in talks with Leipzig and that shifts the market. When Madrid enter, agents pay attention, selling clubs harden their stance and rivals start wondering whether they are driving up the fee for somebody else.

There is logic to Madrid’s move. They are looking at right-sided attacking options while uncertainty remains around Brahim Diaz, even if he wants to stay. Their transfer activity under Jose Mourinho has already been aggressive, and Diomande fits the profile of a high-ceiling wide forward who could hold value for years.

RB Leipzig hold the power

Leipzig are under no pressure. Diomande is contracted until 2030, which means they control the tempo and the valuation. If they sell now, he would become their biggest outgoing deal, beyond Josko Gvardiol and Benjamin Sesko. That matters. Clubs like Leipzig benchmark these things internally and externally.

From a Liverpool perspective, this comes down to two questions, price and conviction. If the club truly believe Diomande is a difference-maker, then they move decisively. If they see him as one talented option among many, then this can drift, and drifting in a market like this usually ends with somebody else signing the player.

Our View

Here is the frustrating part for Liverpool fans. This is the sort of story that always sounds familiar. Talented young attacker, obvious upside, big fee, half of Europe circling, and Liverpool are there somewhere in the conversation without actually taking control of it.

If Diomande is good enough, act like it. Stop behaving as though every major transfer needs six weeks of internal debate, valuation models and strategic caution while Real Madrid and PSG test the water properly. The price is huge, yes, but elite young attackers with output, pace and resale value do not come cheap. Everybody knows that.

And if the club think £102.5 million is too much, that is perfectly fair too, but then move on quickly and secure the next target. The worst outcome is hanging around on the edge of a deal, helping inflate the market and ending up empty-handed.
