Real Madrid have been very busy in recent weeks, and on Thursday, they announced their third signing of the summer. The arrivals of Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva were made official earlier in the week, and now, it’s the turn of Ibrahima Konate to be unveiled.
Konate was the first signing that Florentino Perez agreed. The defender was confirmed to be leaving Liverpool when his contract expired, and within a few days, an agreement was secured to bring him to the Bernabeu – which Perez first revealed during his election campaign.
Despite being the first deal done, Konate has had to wait to be confirmed as a Real Madrid. However, it’s been announced now, with the club releasing a statement on Thursday – in the process, they revealed that he has signed a four-year contract in the Spanish capital.
“Real Madrid C. F. and Ibrahima Konate have reached an agreement whereby he will be a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030.”
Can Konate solve Real Madrid’s defensive woes?
Given how poor Real Madrid were as a defensive suit during the 2025-26 season, the club’s sporting department moved quickly to prioritise signings in the back-line. Konate was quickly identified as a leading target by Perez, and he will now continue his career at the Bernabeu from this summer onwards.
Konate will arrive at Real Madrid with some uncertainty, given that he was disappointing during his final season at Liverpool. He will need to step up if he is to secure a regular starting spot in Jose Mourinho’s squad, as he will be competing with the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio – as well as one more signing that the Portuguese head coach wants done in the next few weeks.
Konate will officially be presented as a Real Madrid player by Perez later in the summer, once his involvement at the 2026 World Cup comes to an end. Until then, supporters can watch him in action for France.
