Myles Garrett primarily played defensive end in the Cleveland Browns‘ 4-3 scheme, but he’ll be in a 3-4 front as a member of the rams/343" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Los Angeles Rams now. The Rams still have some 4-3 principles in their scheme, and they run so much nickel and dime that they can mix up their fronts often, but Garrett will be more of an outside linebacker than a defensive end in a three-point stance.
Needless to say, defensive coordinator Chris Shula isn’t the least bit worried about his fit in Los Angeles‘ system. When asked whether Garrett will be more of an outside linebacker or stay at defensive end, Shula used Michael Jordan and LeBron James as examples of not taking superstars away from what they do best.
“Obviously, we’re still going to have our principles with that stuff, but we’re going to let him do what he does best and we all know exactly what he does best,” Shula said. “You’re not going to take Michael Jordan, LeBron, all those guys and pull them out of their comfort zone. We’re going to work with him and put him in the best spots that we think for him and the defense to succeed.”
In reference to “what he does best,” Shula is clearly referring to Garrett’s ability to rush the passer. In a 3-4 defense, outside linebackers are asked to drop into coverage from time to time, but it doesn’t sound like the Rams will have him doing that very much.
Last year with the Browns, Garrett had exactly zero snaps in coverage after recording just 17 in 2024, per Pro Football Focus.
For comparison, Byron Young dropped back 148 times last season, while Jared Verse had just 18 coverage snaps. There’s no question Garrett will play the role of Verse in Los Angeles, primarily rushing the passer and stopping the run.
The Rams aren’t going to try fitting a square peg into a round hole for the fun of it. They’re going to let Garrett do what he’s best at, and that’s hunting the quarterback.
