Kirk Herbstreit was on the call for the Texas Longhorns’ dramatic win over the Ole Miss Rebels, and didn’t exactly appreciate Arch Manning’s decision-making.
Manning made what proved to be the last touchdown of the game to seal an all-important win against the seventh-best team in the country coming into the weekend.
However, there were moments earlier in the game when Manning’s decision-making was being questioned, including by the commentators.
Kirk Herbstreit calls out Arch Manning for ‘just hoping’ with poor pass that led to interception
During the fourth quarter, with the score tied 24-24, Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns were trying to get past their own 35-yard line.
On a first down, with no pressure on him, Manning threw a long pass that got picked by Jalyn Crawford, giving Ole Miss the chance to take the lead.
During the broadcast, ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit questioned Arch Manning’s decision-making, suggesting that the quarterback didn’t make the best pass.
Herbstreit said: “Where is he putting it? This one just didn’t make a lot of sense. Throwing it downfield with 2 defenders…”
“The safety almost had to call a fair catch it was in the air so long… Just a poor decision by Manning. Putting it up and just hoping.”
Luckily for Manning, his pick didn’t lead to Ole Miss scoring, on the other end. He managed to make up for it soon after, scoring a rushing TD to give the Longhorns the lead.
Texas managed to extend this lead later with a field goal. And while Ole Miss came close to coming back, the Longhorns managed to earn a huge win.
Last night’s game was a perfect example of the strengths that Manning has as a quarterback, but also the areas he needs to improve before he enters the NFL.
