Raiders sign veteran receiver who was once 2nd on Broncos in TD catches

The past two days there has been a wide receiver wearing number 36 who was in Raiders minicamp on a tryout basis. That player turned out to be former Broncos and Steelers wide receiver Brandon Johnson. And he did well enough to earn his way onto the offseason roster.

Wednesday, following the final day of minicamp for the Raiders, Johnson signed with the team.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have placed undrafted free agent Corey Rucker on injured reserve.

Johnson initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos in 2022 and played seven games (one start) as a rookie, pulling in six catches for 42 yards (7.0 avg.) and one touchdown.

The 6-2, 195-pounder saw a year two leap appearing in 13 games (two starts) and recorded single-season career highs in every category, posting 19 catches for 284 yards (14.9 avg.) and four touchdowns. His four touchdowns was second on the team only to Courtland Sutton while his 14.9 yards per reception average ranked 29th in the NFL.

The following season, he didn’t make the Broncos’ regular season roster and signed onto the Steelers’ practice squad where he would be elevate three times, but caught just one pass for nine yards.

Last season he spent time on the practices squads for the Broncos and Buccaneers.
