Quinn Ewers traded from Dolphins to Texans' AFC South rival

In 2025, Quinn Ewers went from leading Texas to a College Football Playoff berth to becoming a seventh-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins. Less than 14 months after getting drafted to play in Miami, he’s heading right to the Texans’ division.

The Dolphins traded Ewers to the Jaguars on Saturday for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick, according to Adam Schefter, ending his tenure in Miami after he went 1-2 as a starter after former Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa was benched. While his performance left things to be desired (66.7 percent completion percentage, 622 yards, and an equal number of touchdowns and interceptions), Ewers saw it as an audition to last in the league.

“I want a future in this league, obviously,” Ewers told Jon Gruden on his Gruden Goes Long podcast. “I want to play in this league for as long as I can. And I know that that’s where it started for me was my rookie year and putting good stuff on tape and just continuing to get better…”

Ewers will be shifting from one somewhat crowded QB room to another. Trevor Lawrence is the locked-in starter in Jacksonville, while Nick Mullens and Carter Bradley serve as his primary backups. Each of them was shaky during appearances in the preseason, and the addition of Ewers gives the Jaguars another developmental option to work with.

The Texans already feel like they owe the Jaguars one. Despite both teams finishing on absurd hot streaks to end the 2025 season, the Jaguars kept the Texans from winning a third straight AFC South title, forcing them to go on the road to start the playoffs. 

Playing in Jacksonville at least allows Ewers one trip back to his home state when the Jags play the Texans on December 20. The former five-star recruit had plenty of success in the state, both at Southlake Carroll High School and at Texas. Now he gets another shot at being a long-term backup in the league, moving his talents five hours to North Florida.
