Prof Afaha appointed pioneer VC of Akwa Ibom State University of Education

In May 2023, the Governing Council of the University of Abuja appointed him Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration.

In that capacity, he was responsible for providing administrative leadership and contributing to the management of the institution’s affairs.

Academic and Research Background

Afaha’s academic interests cover global political dynamics, social movements and international relations.

His research interests also include U.S.-Nigeria economic diplomacy, reflecting his broader focus on international relations and political developments.

Beyond his academic career, he is a recipient of the NYSC National Merit Award and has contributed to youth development and professional advancement through mentorship and service to various organisations.

He has also been associated with the Akwa Ibom State Corpers Forum, Abuja Chapter, where he contributed to initiatives focused on youth engagement and development.

His academic and administrative experience is expected to inform his leadership of the new university as it begins operations under its new institutional status.

Pioneer VC Faces Foundation-Building Task

As the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Afaha will be responsible for providing the academic and administrative leadership needed to establish the university’s institutional structures and set its direction.

The transition from the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, to a university represents a new phase for the institution and is expected to expand its role in teacher education and professional development.

His appointment therefore comes at a foundational stage, with the university expected to develop the academic, administrative and governance structures required of a degree-awarding institution.

Afaha is expected to work with the state government, governing authorities, staff, students and other stakeholders to establish systems capable of supporting teaching, research and professional development.

The institution is also expected to contribute to the preparation of teachers and other education professionals while supporting the broader development of the state’s education sector.

With his background in university administration, history and academic leadership, Afaha assumes office as the institution’s first Vice-Chancellor at a period when the university will be laying the foundations for its long-term academic and administrative identity.
