After a disappointing road loss to start the season, the Boston College football team will play in their home opener on Friday against Rutgers for the annual Red Bandanna game. This is the first time that the game will be played on September 11th, and their opponent for the 25th anniversary is also paying tribute to the anniversary with custom jerseys of their own.
Who: Boston College Eagles (0-1) vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-1)
Where: Alumni Stadium, Chestnut Hill, MA
How to Watch: This game will be broadcast live on ESPN2
Our staff has spent this week compiling some great content to preview this match-up. Take a look:
- Settle in, McKenzie. In his FBS debut, Boston College starting QB Mason McKenzie looked unsettled, unable to complete many passes or generate sustained drives for much of the game against Cincinnati. But he improved as the game went along, and hopefully will see more success with a friendlier crowd against an easier opponent. But if he starts to struggle early, it could be a long night for BC.
- Run early and often. Eagles RBs Evan Dickens and Bo McCormack are hugely important to the team’s success on Friday night. If they can establish an effective run game in tandem with McKenzie’s rushing ability, it will open up the rest of the field to create effective offense. It’s a promising sign that Rutgers let up over 200 rushing yards last week. BC really does not want to play from behind and get caught in long passing downs.
Force turnovers. One of the big reasons UMass was able to upset Rutgers last week was their victory in the turnover battle. Although Dylan Lonergan won’t be playing, his 3 INTs and 1 fumble were crucial in flipping the game. If they want to control time of possession and the pace of the game, BC needs to get pressure on AJ Surace and force him into mistakes.

For Welles! In a season that might be another dud for Boston College, at least this game should feel good. It’s a meaningful Red Bandanna night, the home opener, and their opponent is extremely beatable. If the Eagles can’t muster a win on Friday, something has gone terribly wrong.
