Riverton Parke’s softball team outscored Southwood 14-9 in a Class A Frontier Semistate early semifinal contest Saturday, vaulting the Panthers into Saturday night’s 7 o’clock championship game against either South Central or North Newton.
Riverton Parke scored three runs in the fourth inning, five in the fifth and two in the sixth to catapult on top and seal the outcome.
The South Central-North Newton final score was not available as of this writing and no other details were available from Riverton Parke’s victory.
The Panthers, ranked 10th in the final Softball Coaches Association of Indiana Class A poll, improved to 23-8 for the season. Southwood finished 17-8.
• Guerin Catholic 4, Northview 1 — At Mooresville, coach Jacob Harden’s Knights were held to five hits by the No. 2-ranked Class 3A team in the state Saturday in a one-game regional clash.
Easton Thomas knocked in Northview’s only run with an infield single with the bases loaded in third inning. Starting pitcher Jackson Pierce allowed all four runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out five batters and walking four.
“Jackson Pierce pitched a phenomenal game,” Harden told the Tribune-Star afterward. “[Guerin Catholic] just got the big two-out hits when we didn’t.”
Guerin Catholic, which tallied a pair of runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to overcome the Knights’ early 1-0 lead, will take a 25-3-1 mark into next Saturday’s semistate. Northview ended up 17-9.
• Rossville 3, Riverton Parke 0 — At Lafayette’s Loeb Stadium, Riverton Parke lost in the one-game Class A Lafayette Regional on Saturday, finishing the Panthers’ season with a 17-13 record.
Riverton Parke scattered six hits. Rossville had only three hits but made the most of its scoring opportunities, notching a single run in the second, third and fifth innings respectively.
No. 5-ranked Rossville will take a 19-11 mark into next Saturday’s semistate.
