Premier League club ready to test the waters with move for ‘untouchable’ Chelsea talent

Coventry City are considering an ambitious move for Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong as Frank Lampard looks to strengthen his squad for their return to the Premier League.

Acheampong has developed into one of Chelsea’s most highly rated academy graduates, making 17 league appearances last season and attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

However, the arrival of Maxence Lacroix has increased competition in Xabi Alonso’s defence, potentially opening the door to a temporary move where the 20-year-old would receive regular football.

Coventry are pushing for Chelsea star Acheampong

According to talkSPORT, Coventry have identified Acheampong as a potential addition and Chelsea could consider either a loan or permanent proposal before the transfer window closes.

Lampard’s presence adds an interesting dimension. The Coventry boss has extensive knowledge of Chelsea’s academy system and has previously shown a willingness to trust young players, making the Sky Blues an attractive destination if Acheampong needs guaranteed Premier League minutes.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have all admired the versatile defender in the past.

Chelsea rejected approaches earlier in the summer and described him as effectively “untouchable,” while Acheampong remains protected by a contract running until 2029.

There is also some conflicting information over Chelsea’s latest position. The Times reported that Acheampong is still regarded as one of the defenders Chelsea do not want to sell permanently.

A loan move would work for all the parties involved

A permanent sale would be surprising given Acheampong’s age, versatility and potential.

Chelsea have already invested heavily in developing him and would risk watching another academy product become significantly more valuable elsewhere. A loan is a different matter.

Coventry could potentially give Acheampong something Chelsea cannot guarantee this season: consistent Premier League starts.

Playing regularly for Lampard would accelerate his development far more than sitting behind several established defenders at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are also reshaping their back line, with Benoît Badiashile heading towards Napoli and several other defenders potentially leaving.

That makes completely removing Acheampong from Alonso’s options questionable.

The smartest compromise would therefore be a straightforward loan without a purchase option.

Coventry would gain an athletic, technically gifted defender for their survival push, while Chelsea could assess Acheampong after a full season of Premier League football.
