Prediction: Austin FC vs Tijuana

Two camps who will open their respective Leagues Cup adventures in the early hours of Friday, Austin will welcome Tijuana to Texas.

With Europe’s elite domestic leagues set to officially make their returns over the next fortnight, there are plenty of eye-catching betting promotions available.

Verdict: Goal to be scored in both halves

Austin FC

Starting with the hosts, while Austin might have marked their return from the World Cup interval with a thumping 3-1 victory at home against Seattle, it appears that shock performance might have been just a minor boost for Los Verdes. Firmly scrapping it out at the foot of the Western Conference standings and facing a major uphill battle in the race to mount any kind of play-off charge, interim boss Davy Arnaud has a major job on his hands in Texas. Signing off July with a nightmare 3-0 drumming against Houston, Austin have now lost five of their previous six MLS appearances on either side of the summer break. Heading into the six-week interval with another worrying 3-0 defeat against St. Louis, Friday’s hosts have unsurprisingly gained a reputation for their glaring defensive struggles.

Set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines after sustaining a long-term Achilles tendon injury back in May, Austin will once again be without the services of Danish defender Mikkel Desler here. Likewise, Jamaican international Jon Bell is still recovering from a hip issue.

Making a permanent switch from Oxford United over the summer, one-time Birmingham striker Przemyslaw Placheta could be handed an immediate recall in the early hours of Friday and spearhead Los Verdes’ attack.

As for the visitors, while Tijuana might travel to Texas in the early hours of Friday pencilled in as a real underdog contender, the Mexican giants could be smelling the chance to spring a potential upset on foreign soil. Opening the new Apertura campaign with a dominant display as they stormed their way to a thumping 3-1 victory against bitter domestic foes Tigres, Sebastian Abreu’s men certainly find the mood in their camp at a continued high. Mustering seven points from their first three Apertura appearances, Friday’s guests have continued to impress on either side of the summer interval. In fact, Tijuana have not suffered a single defeat in any of their last eight consecutive appearances across all competitions – a purple patch that stems back to March 21st.

Ahead of their trip to Texas on Friday, Tijuana have reported a clean bill of health. Only making a late cameo appearance last weekend, former Elche striker Mourad El Ghezouani could be handed a full recall and the chance to spearhead Abreu’s attack.

Featuring for Ecuador at the 2026 World Cup this summer, ex-Olympiacos star Jackson Porozo will start at the heart of Tijuana’s defence in the early hours of Friday and partner 24-year-old Alejandro Gomez.

Austin FC vs Tijuana Key Factors to Consider

  • Friday’s Leagues Cup showdown in Texas will be the first meeting between Austin and Tijuana.
  • Austin have lost five of their last six MLS appearances on either side of the summer interval.
  • Friday’s hosts have shipped 15 goals in those six consecutive MLS matchups.
  • Tijuana have not suffered a single defeat in any of their last eight consecutive appearances across all competitions – a purple patch that stems back to March 21st.
  • Six of Austin’s last seven appearances have finished with over 2.5 goals.

While Austin might open their Leagues Cup adventure pencilled in as a standout contender here, Friday’s hosts should be bracing themselves for a potentially gritty challenge. Losing five of their previous six MLS appearances and showing some real defensive struggles, Los Verdes will meet a Tijuana squad who have continued to shine on either side of the summer interval. Opening proceedings with a thumping 3-1 victory against domestic foes Tigres, we could be treated to an enjoyable Leagues Cup opener in Texas.
