Pinango Optioned and Other Jays New Bits

Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Yohendrick Pinango (24) hits a double against the New York Yankees

Yohendrick Pinango has been optioned to AAA Buffalo to make room for Luis Urias, who was acquired over the weekend from the Diamondbacks in exchange for cash.

Pinango has been with the big league club since late April and has performed reasonably well, with a .283/.331/.433 line that’s 13% better than league average. Urias offers more defensive versatility, being able to handle second, third or short in a pinch while Pinango is limited to left field and realistically should mostly DH. With Daulton Varsho back, the Jays’ starting outfield is all left handed, which makes Pinango somewhat surplus to requirements. Urias is a significant offensive downgrade overall, but he does hit lefties reasonably well. That could help a Jays lineup that’s been one of the five worst in the majors against southpaws.

• Yimi Garcia is dealing with some soreness following his most recent rehab outing. He met with team doctors today, and the hope is that he won’t need a long shutdown, but it sounds like he’s not going to be back in the near term

• Max Scherzer threw a bullpen session that went well, while Addison Barger has completed his throwing program and could join Dunedin to begin his rehab assignment on Thursday.

• Ernie Clement leads all AL players in All Star votes. I love Ernie, but that seems like an overreaction.

• Tomorrow’s game is at 4:07pm to get ahead of the Panama Croatia World Cup match at 5:00. The Jays are warning that traffic’s going to be a mess, so if you’re going to the game consider showing up early and taking transit if at all possible.
