The Pittsburgh Penguins have kept some goalie depth in the system.

Pittsburgh announced on June 16 that the Penguins have re-signed goaltender Taylor Gauthier to a one-year contract extension. The two-way contract carries an AAV of $850,000 at the NHL level.

The 25-year-old has been in the Penguins organization for four seasons and spent last year in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers. In the ECHL, he went 21-9-5 with a 2.09 GAA and a .929 SV%, which ranks third and second in the ECHL, respectively.

As well, Gauthier became Wheeling’s all-time wins leader and shutouts leader, as he backstopped the ECHL team to the Eastern Conference Finals, as he’s spent the majority of his career in Wheeling in the ECHL.

Gauthier has appeared in 25 career games in the AHL, going 10-5-7 with a 2.77 GAA and a .908 SV% and could get a chance in the AHL this upcoming season.

Pittsburgh is expected to have a tandem of Sergei Murashov and Arturs Silovs, while Joel Blomqvist could be the AHL starter, with Gauthier backing him up.

Gauthier signed with the Penguins on March 1, 2022, as an undrafted free agent after a five-year career in the WHL. He was a member of Team Canada’s World Juniors team in 2021, winning a silver medal, and won a gold medal at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2019 with Canada.
