Pelissero downplays trade speculation surrounding Jauan Jennings

Jauan Jennings has had a bizarrely quiet start to his Vikings tenure. So far, the veteran receiver, who registered over 1,600 receiving yards over the past two seasons, has caught just two passes for a grand total of nine yards in four games this season.

That has led to trade speculation, especially after cameras caught his frustration boiling over in the team’s win over the Saints on Sunday. Add on top of that the recent addition of Odell Beckham Jr., as well as Monday’s workout of JuJu Smith-Schuster, and the signals appear strong that a trade, potentially involving Jennings, could be in the works.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport added smoke to that fire earlier this week, noting that he’s been “wondering” about Jennings’ trade status and that he expects his name to “heat up” as the trade deadline approaches.

However, Tom Pelissero doesn’t expect any movement on Jennings anytime soon.

“I don’t anticipate Jauan Jennings is going anywhere,” Pelissero said Thursday morning on KFAN’s Power Trip Morning Show. “I expect he’s going to be on the team after the bye. Certainly there’s been trade interest in him. That’s typical when a player’s had the low production level Jauan’s had so far this season. Other teams begin to call.

“But I believe that he’s going to be on the roster. I believe that there’s more in there. He hasn’t played his best. They haven’t necessarily gotten him the opportunities that they would like to. But he’s still a different body type that they don’t have in anybody else.”

The Vikings signed Jennings this offseason to a one-year, $8 million contract. While the marriage hasn’t produced during the Vikings’ 5-0 start, head coach Kevin O’Connell isn’t showing concern and says Jennings has been doing all the right things.

“I do believe his opportunities will come,” O’Connell said on Monday. “I do believe, from a play style standpoint and a mentality standpoint, it’s been a real positive having him in that huddle. And it’s still early on in the season. I know, as a coaching staff, we’ll use this (bye) week to try to find different ways to get him a little bit more activated in the pass game.”

As for the potential addition of Smith-Schuster, Pelissero doesn’t see it happening.

“You know, with JuJu, I don’t think they’re going down that road,” he said. “He’s had a couple workouts this week. You’re always churning. I mean, for instance, since Nolan Teasley got there, look at the number of different running backs they’ve cycled on and off the practice squad. They’ve worked out veterans. They’re doing it a lot like Seattle’s done it through the years, where you keep looking. Why wouldn’t you turn over every single stone? In terms of major changes at the wide receiver position, trading somebody away, I’m not expecting it,” said Pelissero.

There are 26 days until the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
